Síle O'Brien

Heritage Tourism Specialist

Documenting accessible monastery routes and pilgrimage paths around Lough Derg and County Clare for 16 years

At matrgym Ltd

Síle grew up in County Limerick, just 40 kilometres from Lough Derg. She's spent the past 16 years walking, researching, and documenting the monastic sites that dot the Irish landscape—work that's become the foundation for accessible heritage tourism guides used by tourism boards across the midwest.

After completing her Medieval History degree at University College Cork in 2008, she began volunteering with the Irish Heritage Trust, leading walking tours around Inis Cealtra and mapping the archaeological features of these ancient settlements. Her shift into accessible tourism came when her mother experienced mobility challenges. That prompted Síle to thoroughly assess terrain, identify rest points, and document practical details that older visitors actually need. What started as personal research eventually became published guides that regional operators now use.
